Archival history

The treasurers of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Tesorieri di Santa Maria Maggiore) originally oversaw the treasury of the cathedral. In the course of time, they assumed the management of the entire state treasury, which was in the cathedral, having kept the name "Treasurers of Our Lady of Great Power". The treasurers also oversaw the affairs of the foundation Opera pia. This service had been already referenced to in the Statute of the Republic of 1272, together with another public service provided by Procuratori di Santa Maria Maggiore. At first, the mandate of the people who served in these offices was lifelong, but, as their responsibilities increased, the mandate was limited to five years in the 16th century and, later, to three years. According to the records from the 18th century, this service was administered by six senators.

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

The fonds has been linked to the archive since its inception. In times of the Dubrovnik Republic, the books of the fonds were stored in the Cathedral. The archival material was completely transferred to the Rector’s Palace by 1891, when consequently the archives were consolidated and made available to researchers. Since 1920, the archive in the Rector's Palace has been functioning as an independent institution and it was dislocated to the Sponza Palace in 1952, where it is still located today.
