Histoire archivistique

The treasurers of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Tesorieri di Santa Maria Maggiore) originally oversaw the treasury of the cathedral. In the course of time, they assumed the management of the entire state treasury, which was in the Cathedral, having kept the name "Treasurers of Our Lady of Great Power". The treasurers also oversaw the affairs of the foundation Opera pia. This service had been already referenced to in the Statute of the Republic in 1272, together with another public service provided at that time: Procuratori di Santa Maria Maggiore. At first, the mandate for the officials in charge of these services was lifelong, but as their responsibilities increased, their mandates were limited to five years in the 16th century and, later, to three years. According to the records from the 18th century, this service was managed by six senators. Among other activities, the treasurers managed and controlled investments in foreign banks (monti) primarily in Italian cities such as Rome, Naples, Venice, Genoa, Palermo, Messina, and, since the 18th century also in Vienna.

Source immédiate d'acquisition ou de transfert

The fonds has been linked to the archive since its inception. In times of the Dubrovnik Republic, the books of the fonds were stored in the Cathedral. By 1891 they were transferred to the Rector’s Palace, and consequently the archives were consolidated and became available to researchers. Since 1920, the archive in the Rector's Palace has been functioning as an independent institution and it was dislocated to the Sponza Palace in 1952, where it is still located today.
