Histoire archivistique
The mint of the Dubrovnik Republic began operating most probably at the end of the 13th century. The mint was in the headquarters of the Large Customs House. Beginning in 1522 The Customs House was in the Sponza Palace, and, before that, its services had been offered in another building located at the same location. The mint of the Republic was under the direct control of the state authorities. Already in 1461, the authorities issued a decree according to which the supervisors of the mint, called zecchieri, had to keep a special book in which they would account for each piece of coin that was minted. Initially, the mint was first administered by zecchieri, then by four customs officers of the Large Customs House. Since the end of the 17th century, five senatorswere involved in the process of supervision and administration of the state mint and at the beginning of 17th century, the state mint also functioned as a public bank that supported commercial operations enabling state loans and providing substantial financial support to satisfy the growing needs of the Dubrovnik Republic.
Source immédiate d'acquisition ou de transfert
The fonds has been linked to the archive since its inception. In times of the Dubrovnik Republic, the books of the fonds were stored at the Sponza Palace. The archival material remained there until 1891, when it was transferred to the Rector’s Palace. The archival materials were then consolidated and became available to researchers. The archive in the Rector's Palace has been functioning as an independent institution since 1920 and it was dislocated to the Sponza Palace in 1952, where it is still located today.
