Archival history

The lower judicial and administrative authorities of the Dubrovnik Republic were organized in two types of administrative units: captaincies and districts. The size of the territory and the number of captaincies and districts changed throughout history according to the needs and discretion of the authorities of the Dubrovnik Republic. In the 18th century there were eleven administrative units: eight districts and three captaincies. The territory of Župa dubrovačka was ruled by a rector whose residence was in the village of Čibača. Among other things the Rector served as a judge and, similar to the role of other rectors and captains who ruled locally, he was not empowered to pass sentences for the most serious crimes committed in the territory under his supervision.

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

The fonds has been linked to the archive since its inception. In the times of the Dubrovnik Republic, the books of the fonds were stored at the Chancellery in Župa dubrovačka and were transferred by 1891 to the Rector’s Palace, when the archives were consolidated and were made available to researchers. The archive in the Rector's Palace has been functioning as an independent institution since 1920 and it was dislocated to the Sponza Palace in 1952, where it is still located today.
