Archival history

The treasurers of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Tesorieri di Santa Maria Maggiore) originally oversaw the management of the treasury of the Dubrovnik Cathedral. In the course of time, they assumed the management of the entire state treasury, which was in the Cathedral, having kept the name "Treasurers of Our Lady of Great Power". The treasurers also oversaw the affairs of the foundation Opera pia. Their service had been already referenced to in the Statute of the Republic of 1272, together with providers of another service at that time, the one provided by legal representatives of the Cathedral, or Procuratori di Santa Maria Maggiore). At first, the mandate of these officials was lifelong, but as their responsibilities increased, the mandate was limited to five years in the 16th century and, later, to three years. According to the records from the 18th century, this service was managed by six noblemen (senators).

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

The fonds has been linked to the archive since its inception. In times of the Dubrovnik Republic, the books of the fonds were stored in the Cathedral. By 1891, the archival material was relocated to the Rector’s Palace and the archives were consolidated and were made available to researchers. The archive in the Rector's Palace has been functioning as an independent institution since 1920 and it was relocated in 1952 to the Sponza Palace, where it is still located today.
